18th October 1942 – 15th January 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher Broadfield Snowdon, a beloved husband, pioneering businessman, and cherished friend to many. Born in October 1942, Chris lived a life defined by passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his family, colleagues, and the causes he held dear.
Chris joined Ernest West & Beynon in 1972 as a third-generation owner and led the company for nearly half a century. Under his stewardship, the business transformed into a proud British manufacturing leader, playing a critical role in supporting the Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary. His personal dedication ensured the success of equipment delivered for ships such as Type 26 Global Combat Ships, Type 45 Destroyers, Type 23 Frigates, Queen Elizabeth-class Aircraft Carriers, Bay-class ships, and Fort-class ships, forging a legacy of excellence in engineering that will endure for years to come.
Chris had a zest for life, embracing fast cars and spending joyful days racing around the Silverstone track, where he won driver of the day on his last visit—a passion he delighted in sharing through stories and videos at the office. He also found joy in the skies, contributing to the upkeep of the historic Spitfire ML407, ‘The Grace Spitfire’ , flown by Carolyn Grace, which performed a flyby display during Ernest West & Beynon’s centenary celebrations.
A man of diverse interests, Chris loved classical music, often finding solace and inspiration in its timeless beauty. He also nurtured a fascination with model trains, proudly building a remarkable set in his loft.
Chris married Ilva in February 2000, and together they built a life filled with love, partnership, and shared joy. Ilva remained steadfastly by his side until his very last moment.
Chris will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his kindness, generosity, and care for those around him. His employees, family, and friends were touched by his warmth, humour, and dedication.
He leaves behind a legacy of engineering brilliance, unwavering devotion to his loved ones, and a life lived to its fullest. Chris will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
As per Chris’ wishes, the family will not be holding a large ceremony or funeral. Instead, it asks if you could spare a few pennies for Alzheimer Research UK. Ilva Snowdon is fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK
